Sheriff McCreadie said: "It is an incredible amount - 30 to 40 bags a day. He has got an appalling record for honesty - housebreaking, shoplifting and breaking into vehicles. "He was back shoplifting the day after he got bail. He got six months for aggravated housebreaking back in 2005 and that doesn't seem to have deterred him. "I can't see any alternative to a custodial sentence. His record is horrendous.

Authorities wanted to see the man spend time in jail because they felt that if not given a harsh enough punishment that he would continue to commit these offenses without impunity. "It is particularly squalid breaking into a school and stealing computers used by children for their education."
