Analgesics are the medicines which are used to kill the pain when it is too intense. There are various types of painkillers, each have their own properties and will be applied in different situations. It’s important to know what kind of painkiller you need so that you would know which one to take depending on your situation.

acetaminophen Tylenol is a common painkiller. Unlike other pain medications, Tylenol doesn’t possess anti-inflammatory properties. However, when dealing with chronic pain with no sign of inflammation, the drug may be used quite effectively for overcoming this condition. Tylenol is regarded as a safe drug in normal amounts, but can pose a serious threat when taken in excess. You should also be careful about mixing Tylenol with such prescription drugs as Percocet or Darvocet because the mixture can be destructive.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

The NSAID are most usually used for treating acute pain and inflammations in cases of chronic pain. These drugs are extremely helpful when addressing inflammatory problems such as arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis. NSAIDs are usually regarded as a very safe option for treating chronic pain, the only downside however being stomach problems that were observed with the long time use of such drugs. The newer generations of NSAIDs, called COX-2 inhibitors (Celebrex), are reported to have handled that problem, but doctors still suggest paying attention and not use these medications for longer periods of time. Corticosteroids similar to NSAIDs are extremely potent anti-inflammatory drugs, which are applied in cases of sensitive pain or flare-ups during chronic pain issues.

Corticosteroid generally exists in oral form Medrol, Prednisone or as injections. Other types of analgesics are narcotics (opioids and opiates) are usually considered as the last solution when dealing with pain. These drugs have an effect on the actual perception of pain by altering the ability to receive and interpret pain signals in the brain. Narcotics are highly effective when dealing with acute pain; however such efficiency comes with a price as there is a strong dependency can be developed from using these drugs. Synthetic opioids such as Tramadol are less prone to this problem, but are still known to create withdrawal symptoms when one stops taking it, which is very ordinary with natural narcotics. Such drugs should be administered only with appropriate indications of a specialized and only for treating chronic pain. Anti-convulsing drugs are regularly applied in cases of nerve pain. This type of drugs works by altering the work of nerves and signals that are sent to the brain.

What's important to remember with analgesics is in some situation it is inevitable to use them such as surgery, emergency and other such problems but people have to be aware of the level of addiction some analgesics can create. Always check with your doctor and if you are not sure check on the internet or with an addiction specialist. Sometimes a simple surgery can become a nightmare!

As a helpline, 10 years ago 95% of our calls were for street drugs and alcohol addiction. Now we get 30% of calls for analgesics that were prescribed at first for a medical condition.
