Anorexia and drug addiction

Print

Anorexia is a well known eating disorder, usually found among teenage girls and models.  They seem to have the delusional sense that they are overweight although many are extremely thin to the point of it being dangerous for them health-wise.

Anorexia is a control issue disorder among young people.  It is their way of taking control over something when everything else in their lives may seem a bit out of control.  Anorexia is also driven by a fear of being fat and the young person may refuse to eat or drink hardly anything, forcing herself to throw up, take laxatives and exercise above and beyond what would be warranted for her size and age.

If you notice a loved one with this eating disorder, do not be surprised to hear denial come out of her mouth.  She literally and truly believes she is overweight, even if she is so underweight it is causing physical health problems for her.  Anorexia very seldom if ever can be cured on its own.  It takes help, counseling, therapy and the family has to be prepared to take firm action because you are saving your family member's life.

Anorexia is a very real eating disorder that affects approximately 1% of the teenage population, with 10% of those affected dying from it.  That is a very high percentage of deaths when you think about it.  So what do you do if you are a young person and you suspect your friend has anorexia?  Do your friend a favor and go to an adult who can help: a teacher, a parent, the pastor of your church or your principal.  Talk to the school nurse.  Get someone's attention.  You will be doing your friend a big favor because the earlier she can get help with her eating disorder, the better her chances are of a full recovery.
