The city of Calgary is one of the biggest cities in Canada and is the biggest city of Alberta.Calgary's population has now grown over one million people, thus indicating that Calgary is a very prosperous city, with an average increase of its population of 2.18% per year. However with this population increase comes a growth in addiction and drug use.
Crack/Cocaine is probably the most used drug in southern Alberta, combined with increasing use of Marijuana and Crystal Meth.
Since this city is very big and very diverse, one can find just about any sort of drugs. And since all of the drugs are usually very addictive, there is a great amount of people who are addicted to drugs and need to be helped through a drug rehab center. The following drugs can be found in Calgary :- Marijuana
- Cocaine
- Heroin
- Methamphetamine
- Ecstasy
- Prescription drugs (especially OxyContin)
- Calgary has 13 outpatient day treatments or evening alcohol and drug rehab centers.
- The city has 10 residential alcohol and drug rehab and 6 of them are private (self pay or insurance) facilities.

Marijuana Addiction in Calgary
Marijuana is a very popular drug in Calgary as it is very cheap and easy to obtain. There are many false assumptions when it comes to marijuana. Although there are some medicinal values related to marijuana consumption, people often forget about the addictive nature of marijuana. Although it isn’t as bad as some of the stronger drugs, people can still develop a psychological addiction to marijuana and need drug rehab.Furthermore, marijuana producers and dealers often deal in very big amounts of marijuana. In the beginning of 2009, two homes were searched and the people located in the houses were charged with marijuana production with intent to sell. The police force found more than a thousand pot plants in each house, for a total value of around 3.5 million dollars. And many other cannabis busts are often between a million and two million dollars in pot plants. The police reported that each year, they find and condemn around 100 marijuana growing operations. This exemple shows just how available marijuana is in Calgary.
Cocaine Addiction in Calgary
There are many dangers related to cocaine consumption. There are of course the usual problems related to the addictive nature of cocaine and its effects on the mind and body. But at the end of the year 2008, an additional problem came up: most of the cocaine in Calgary was laced with a dangerous substance which created numerous problems to the immune system of its consumers. In 2009, the police force of Calgary put an end to a year-long investigation which led to the largest cocaine seizure in all of the history of the province of Alberta. The forces recovered over 80 kilograms of cocaine, which would’ve been worth around eight million dollars on the streets. This shows just how much cocaine is actually available in Calgary, as they are not the only ones who traffic cocaine. This is why drug rehabs are necessary in Calgary.
Heroin Addiction in Calgary
Heroin is a highly addictive drug which unfortunately is being abused by people in Calgary. There have been various police operations which ended with a large quantity of heroin being confiscated. One of the police busts in 2008 ended with 7.8 kilograms of heroin being retrieved. A lot of people in Calgary are in need of a drug rehab treatment to get over their heroin addiction. It is important to make sure the rehab treatment one chooses fits their needs.Ecstasy Addiction in Calgary
For example, one bust in Calgary in 2002 found 120 kilograms of ecstasy powder that had yet to be changed in pill form. This powder would have made 1.5 million ecstasy pills, worth about 52.5 million dollars on the street. This is the kind of drug operation that have to be shut down in order to curb the drug addiction in Calgary. For the ones addicted to that drug, there are ecstasy drug rehab centers to help them.
Prescription Drugs Addiction in Calgary
Prescription drugs can become really addictive, even if taken with a prescription. However when a person starts taking pills illegally, it can become a serious problem. The drug that is most prominent in Calgary is OxyContin, a brand name for oxycodone. A woman overdosed on a mix of various prescription drugs which were actually prescribed to her.
Another problem related to OxyContin addiction is drug theft. Many people get so addicted to OxyContin that they end up stealing the drug in pharmacies and committing various other crimes in order to get their OxyContin. This has happened few times in Calgary. When not stealing, some individuals will get fake prescriptions and go to various pharmacies in order to get Oxycontin more then once.
Calgary, Alberta Drug Rehab
Finding a drug rehab center can become really confusing when comes the time to choose the right drug rehabilitation program. You will receive information from many different centers and will not know which one is the best to fulfill your needs. Some drug rehab centers will tell you that they have the best program. Other drug rehabs won't be able to give you a success rate, or will be very vague and complex about their drug treatments. You may even ask yourself, how can a drug and rehab center is not able to give you a success rate? The answer is they don't have any or their aftercare follow up is very poor.
While Alcohol and Drug addiction has grown in Calgary over the past year, this growth is not exclusive to the city of Calgary per say; the Calgary region also has seen a growth in addiction, in such municipalities such as Airdrie, Cochrane and Rocky View County. The Calgary Police Service has released statistics for 2010 and they have sadly shown an increase compared to previous years. 2010 has seen the number of drug-related arrest grow over 2000, with an all time high in possession and growth of illegal drugs. While numbers of cocaine busts are down, Ecstacy and Methamphetamine arrets have increased, which is worrying considering how harmful these substances are. Overall, the Calgary police force has seized close to a 100 000 000$ in narcotics. These numbers should make it clear that drug troubles in Calgary are not on their way out and it is often necessary to send people to drug and alcohol detox & rehab centers in order that they attain a drug free life.
DrugRehab.ca has done their homework and looked at the actual success rate of drug rehab centers in Calgary.
We have a standing philosophy at DrugRehab.ca. We have researched all of the drug rehabs within Canada. We will not refer you to a drug rehabilitation program which uses other drugs within their programs. We believe a pill will not handle life’s problems, and cure drug addiction. Drug and alcohol addictions occur from an inability to deal with life. The person is not in control of their life and take drugs and/or alcohol as a solution. How can a pill increases someone's abilities to be more in control? It can’t. Instead it will numb the problem but will not solve it.
Drug Situation in Calgary, Alberta
As reported by the Calgary Police, the youngest drug addicted child they found was a 8 years old that was using Crack/Cocaine.
"The boy was seen talking to a dealer in downtown Calgary on Friday", police said.
As they moved in to arrest the man, "they approached the small child and found in his pocket what would be known on the street as an 'eight ball,' or just about three grams of Crack Cocaine," said Staff-Sergeant Roger Chaffin."
Crack Addiction is really an addictive Drug. In some instances, it has been reported, that one person may try the drug once and get addicted. There are crack rehab centers to help someone become drug free.
In Calgary, it was found that twenty one of the murders in a period of three years were drug related. Also a big portion of burglaries and arson were also drug related. From 1992 to 2002, about one in 10 homicides involved activities such as trafficking or the settling of drug-related accounts. Cocaine was involved in 60% of these drug-related homicides.
Drug-related incidents account for nearly one in ten court cases. Drug-related cases accounted for 7% of cases processed in youth courts; 5% were for possession and 2% for trafficking.
"Peddlers who push pot are just as poisonous as Crack and Heroin dealers and it's time citizens realize those criminals need to be taken off the streets", says a Calgary Police Drug expert.
Police busted a sophisticated grow operation, seizing close to $140,000 worth of plants in the city's northwest last week.
"If this was $100,000 of Ecstasy it would hit the front pages across Western Canada. If it was Cocaine or Heroin it would have a lot of people upset," said Detective Pat Tetley.
"But when you see $100,000 worth of Marijuana, the same stigma is not attached."
Tetley says it should be.
Calgary has a few number of private and government drug rehab centers
Detective Steve Patterson from the Calgary Police Service was capable to provide Y.A.D.U.C. with helpful information into the drug scene in Calgary. He has served on the police force for 23 years working in the 'major crimes' area, exposing him to the 'real' effects of narcotic use. He identified cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy and mushrooms as the drugs of greatest concern within our city, with methamphetamines emerging as a popular substance as well.
Even though his work monitoring criminal activity cannot identify particular trends with certainty, he does speculate that the economic success of our city contributes highly to the prevalence of drug use here. Predicting drug use is hard because there are problems in distinguishing 'drug abusers' from so-called 'casual users', who are not the primary focus of the narcotics unit. Furthermore, there is speculation that figures on substances use is underestimated because of the difficulty in monitoring the activities of this group. The Detective says "Make no mistake; there is no such thing as a 'casual user of narcotics. The beliefs of these individuals, 'I am not hurting anyone else' is false." Taking all of this information into consideration, drug use in Calgary may be even more prevalent than we would like to believe based on the approximations available to us.
The detective warns that narcotic use is not an isolated issue, but one that brings about a number of other negative elements. Offences like prostitution, murder, auto theft and robbery are frequently linked to even 'casual' drug use. Detective Patterson has provided this analogy of narcotic use and its effects to send a very important message to young adults:
"Can you picture a beautiful tree in a backyard somewhere?
You are the trunk of this tree.
The family you have and your friends are the roots and earth that keep
you grounded. They nurture you and allow you to flourish. The leaves are
all the individuals that you have touched in the world. The seeds produced
are the future.
Narcotics cut a ring around your trunk and put poison into your system. The
leaves die first. Then the roots die. The outcome is predictable. Initial
drug use is the choice of the user. My advice is, choose wisely.
Don't start. Don't contribute to the dark side of society." (Patterson, 2003)
