cirrhosis in Relation to Drugs and Alcohol Abuse

Cirrhosis is a life-threatening disease that attacks the liver. It can be caused by drug use, overdosing on something as simple as acetaminophen and excessive alcohol consumption. To make matters worse, cirrhosis is a disease that can go without displaying symptoms until it is too late for treatment.

What is cirrhosis? It is an actual scarring of the liver tissue that causes a massive reduction in liver function. The liver is one of the most vital organs a person has. Just as we can learn to live without our appendix; the opposite is true when it comes to our liver. We can live with one kidney, some people even live with one healthy lung but we cannot live without a liver. The damage done to a liver by cirrhosis is permanent and cannot be fixed. Once the liver stops functioning, only a transplant can save the patient.

There are enough medical causes for a liver to fail on its own, yet the most common are actually voluntarily induced. Drug addiction and especially alcoholism, are the number one causes of cirrhosis of the liver. It is sadly ironic that there are children fighting for their lives long enough to wait for a liver transplant and teenagers and adults destroying them voluntarily through alcohol. If this sounds harsh, it needs to. We need to take responsibility for our actions.

When the symptoms do finally begin to appear for cirrhosis, they include weakness, nausea, weight loss, and tiny spider like vessels prominently displayed on the skin. By then the permanent damage is done. While some cases may be controlled at this point by changing lifestyles and a doctor monitoring the situation, others have gone beyond such help and await transplants or the realization that nothing can be done medically as it causes illness to spread to other parts of the body.
