Drug-Related Issues in Coquitlam, British Columbia

Yet another glorious city within the magnificent province of British Columbia, Coquitlam is indeed a large and thriving city. Like many other parts of British Columbia it is renowned for its beauty and convenience to wildlife. Of course, it is quite the populated city though. Many of British Columbia’s cities are located around Vancouver, the capital of the province. The same is true for Coquitlam, and while it may be convenient when one needs to travel to the capital, it is also hazardous for individuals’ lives. Though it is a wonderful city to live in, one must be prepared for the harsh realities present within the city when referring to the drug-related problems and issues that are present.

General Situation

As mentioned, the city of Coquitlam is located within a few minutes travel of Vancouver. This is also referred to as being located within the metro Vancouver area, a region in which many cities of high populations have easy access to Vancouver, almost like the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario. This accessibility has been proven to be disastrous towards certain social issues before, and does so again with Coquitlam. Bear in mind that location is not all to blame for the increased quantity of drug-related issues. In fact, Coquitlam is the fifth largest city within all of British Columbia. It has a population around one-hundred twenty thousand, all of which have different lifestyles and ambitions.

The Problem

As the fifth largest city, Coquitlam is definitely a cause for concern. Though the population is not bountiful, at least when compared to larger cities such as Surrey or Vancouver, it is still moderately sized. As such, worry should still be present. It is also interesting to note that the entire city is built within a suburban fashion, meaning the entire community is easily accessible and drug spread can be quick. Many other cities face these same scenarios, and just like them, Coquitlam has a strained authority force. Road blocks may work for alcohol, but drugs are much harder to find and catch people with. In addition, the lack of travel it takes to get from Vancouver to Coquitlam is a grave cause for concern. Gangs and distributors are able to come to this city often and sell their products to drug-users for profit. If Coquitlam is to cope with the increasing drug trend, they need to implement stricter laws and regulations, and come up with an innovative way to catch drug-users and dealers. As soon as people realize that getting caught can actually happen, they will be much less inclined to take the risk.

The Effected

Young adults, specifically college kids or teenagers are the common age group affected. Though researchers can throw spin after spin, theory after theory as to why this is the case, the simple fact is that these individuals are not yet adults. Their brains and thought process have not progressed to the state where they can tell what is right and what is wrong instantaneously. It is also common for these individuals to think in terms of what it may do immediately. It might make them happy and carefree for a while, but the consequences are a different story. Sadly, teenagers and young adults do not think about such scenarios prior to doing drugs.

Treatment Available

Coquitlam does have some drug rehab facilities and options open to the general public, though they do not possess every single one. As the fifth largest city residing within the metro Vancouver area, it is both good and bad. On the plus side, they have standard treatment available within the city of Coquitlam.
