Girl fighting against her compulsionsDefinition of Cravings

Many of us who have never struggled with drug or alcohol addiction can’t understand the concept behind the anxiety attached to cravings. While we may refer to a craving as an overwhelming desire to partake in something, for a person addicted to drugs and alcohol it’s much more.

When a person is craving for drugs or alcohol, there tends to also be a form of overwhelming need attached to the filling of that craving. The term ‘jonesin’ is also used by drug addicts to say they are ‘craving’ a particular drug that they don’t have in their possession at that moment.

Often times the feeling of craving becomes to the point of obsession, and the person can’t focus on anything else but feeding that craving or need. Often times, they will stop at nothing until that craving is fed. This can lead into withdrawal for those who are trying to overcome their addiction to drugs or alcohol. In severe cases it can also lead to stealing and violence.

If a person is craving for drugs or alcohol, it’s important for them to try to switch their focus onto something else, or to call someone who can come and help them through the time of craving, in hopes that it will pass.

You may notice that certain things trigger drug or alcohol cravings, and if that’s the case try avoiding those situations at all costs. Many have cited that healthy eating and exercise is another way to help overcome cravings and not give in to them.

The important thing to know is that a person with a drug or alcohol problem cannot fight cravings on his or her own. The road to recovery can begin with a simple phone call to a reputable rehabilitation facility.
