Girl feeling depressedDepression can be defined as a state of mind which keeps a person’s mood low and down. In general depression is characterized by sadness, helplessness and distress. This state of mind is found most often in humans when they are unable to reach or achieve what they desire. It is part and parcel of one’s emotions in daily life. It can prove to be very useful at times as some people get motivated and inspired when they are unable to achieve their goals. However it can have a very large impact on a person and can make him suffer from several other emotions. This will only lead to a mental disorder named, major depressive disorder which is commonly known as depression.

At the time of distress and loss, a person tends to succumb to low self-confidence, low self esteem, fear of others around and loss of interest. All these are symptoms of major depressive disorder. This will disable the general physical condition of the person and affect him at his work, study and in his family too.

There are a few symptoms that can give a person certain clues about this major depression disorder. The person will always feel sad and depressed always and try to avoid all aspects of life. Many activities that were formerly enjoyed will be evaded. Insomnia becomes a common sight and hypersomnia becomes a rarity. The person will be always filled with sadness, guilt, loneliness and melancholic thoughts. Thoughts of suicide and death are also common. Old age people show extra symptoms like forgetfulness. However, children do not show such depressed mood and rather have an irritable mood depending on the age and circumstance.

One must never give up and try to stand up to any situation or circumstance. Though this can be mentally and physically tough, one has to endure it to be successful in life.
