Girl feeling DrowsinessDefinition of Drowsiness

Drowsiness is a major concern and symptom of alcohol and drug use. Just as alcohol makes a person stumble and be dizzy, it can also lead to drowsiness. The most popular term for this is passing out. This is usually the most common reason for accidents involving alcohol. The intoxicated driver has simply passed out from drinking too much. It is one of the most important reasons to not drink and drive and why laws are strictly enforced in such cases.

Another cause of drowsiness is GHB, a liquid ecstasy with the street name Georgia Home Boy. Use of this illegal drug can cause drowsiness leading to a loss of consciousness. Paint and gasoline inhalants can lead to sleepiness and the inability to remember things the following morning.

Some over the counter medications such as acetaminophen and other pain relievers can also cause drowsiness. This is why it is so important to take just the recommended dosage and not over use the pain reliever.

Drowsiness is a symptom of many of these substances and others but it is both a major red flag and a minor symptom compared to the permanent damage the drugs and alcohol can do to a person's body, sometimes even leading to death. Drugs and alcohol are nothing to play around with and yet we are not in our coherent “right minds” when we indulge in them so it is a sadly ironic oxymoron.

If you know of someone who seems to be drowsy a lot, so much so that it seems to interfere with daily living and on the job performance, speak to the person privately and see what the problem may be. If you suspect drugs or alcohol, be honest and let the person know you are just trying to help. In the end, you could be helping not only the user, but others who may innocently be hurt by the continued use.
