Drug Addiction in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Saskatoon is like many other cities across Canada. There is a drug and alcohol problem here just like every other town and city across Canada and America for that matter. This is problem that is being dealt with in just about every corner of the globe and it shows no real signs of going away any time soon. It’s a problem that fills our homes, our cars and our schools. It seems to touch every age group, every race, and every economic class without much prejudice at all. The issues of drug and alcohol addiction are growing and research of late has shown that despite all the education and the just saying no programs, youth and teens are turning to alcohol in drugs in every increasing numbers. Today the largest number, the largest segment of abusers of drugs and alcohol are between the ages of 15 and 24.

The police archives in any given city or province is full of reports on drug and alcohol related crimes and arrests. In the month of February one of the largest methamphetamine seizures in Saskatoon police records took place. The police seized around 310 grams of methamphetamines, some cocaine and around $2000 in cash. All of this was headed for the street.

Drugs and alcohol addiction are a huge problem for our young people too. Statistics show that even by age 13 almost a third of all children have tried cigarettes. Almost ¼ of all high school students have reported using marijuana and up ¾ of the graduating students have admitted to drinking alcohol. This is not only representative of Saskatoon but of just about each and every community in North America. Something must be done for the young people of North America and more research and studies are showing that despite our best efforts education does not seem to be working.
