Drug Detox in Kelowna, British Columbia

One common misconception some people may have is that there is only one type of drug detox system such as the cold turkey method of detoxification. This is not the case. While some drug detox programs, especially programs that rely solely on government funding, do believe in such method, other programs prefer different types of detoxification.

Some addicts have been addicted to drugs for so long, or they have become such heavy users, that one of the concern is that the addict’s life could be at risk when they stop using the drugs. When this happens the staff at the detox center will sometimes opt for a weaning style of detoxification.

When a person, who is felt to be at risk, enters into a detoxification program in Kelowna, the staff will continue to provide them with the drugs that they are accustomed to. As time passes, the quantity of drug will gradually be decreased. The staff carefully monitor the addict as they decrease the drug by keeping record of how much of the drug they have had as well as how their body reacted. The idea of this weaning process is that the body will get use to lesser amount of drug and when the drug is ceased the withdrawal symptoms will be less severe.

The length of time the weaning detox process will take depends on the quantity of drugs taken by the person before entering the detoxification program. The staff can usually provide a rough estimate about how long it will take to safely wean the addict from the drugs. They will base their estimate on similar cases that they have seen but will also remind the addict that each person is different and the exact amount of time it takes can vary.
