Heroin isn’t one of the biggest drug problems in Fort McMurray, Alberta, but there is some controversy around heroin injection sites being opened in their city. A Leger poll for QMI Agency has found that 41% of Canadians say they'd accept an injection site in their city or town. Unfortunately, another 43% say they're against the idea.

Heroin injection sites became a big part of the political scene and involved in the federal election agenda when Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff embraced the expansion of such sites across the country. Public opinion is so deeply split and experts are claiming that with public opinion so deeply split, that neither party is likely to get majority support. "When you get a result like that, it cannot be or it won't be a wedge issue either on the Liberal side to gain support or on the Conservative side to win support away from the Liberals," Bourque said.

This is something that can be seen clearly when you look at how support is broken down based on the numbers between each party. When you ask Liberals, and you'll get 66% backing Ignatieff's injection site support, however in a similar poll, 67% of Conservative supporters told Leger they wouldn't want an injection site in their municipality.

Heroin injection sites create quite a bit of controversy; however the sites themselves have been integral piece of drug rehabilitation for many different addictions. Public opinion is often skewed by information that they assume is true, but not necessarily information that is the truth.

Public opinion across Canada is widely ranging. New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois supporters are both about 50% in favor of injection sites. There are also regional variations in the numbers. By far, B.C. residents are the most willing to see drug addicts stumbling out of an injection site. Sixty percent said they're OK with that, while next door in Alberta, 51% are against the idea. Following Alberta were Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan as the most skeptical about heroin injection sites. The Atlantic Provinces and Quebec are most open to injection sites after B.C.
