Girl feeling depressed and having high blood pressureHigh blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is when the heart beats at too high a pace.  When this happens, it can lead to heart problems and strokes if not treated.  While it can be hereditary, or be caused by a medical condition such as heart disease or kidney abnormalities, it can also be caused by stress or age.

The use of illicit drugs over time can cause high blood pressure because it can wreak havoc on the body.  This is yet another good reason to not start a drug habit to begin with.

Once it has been determined what caused high blood pressure in a particular person's situation, then a plan of action is devised.  It may very well be a medical plan that is required and if so, a doctor will diligently oversee the patient's well being.

If it is drug related, then it is important to immediately begin a withdrawal treatment program that can get the addict on the road to recovery.  A counselor can help determine if medical detox or a more natural approach will work better for the person involved.  Once that is determined, then the road to a successful recovery can begin and once the body adapts to being without the illicit drugs, the high blood pressure could very well be rectified.  However, any time that the heart or blood pressure has been affected it is important to make sure that a physical has been done with a medical professional to make sure other health problems have not developed and that the high blood pressure has been eliminated.

Whatever the cause of the high blood pressure, be sure to have it seen about immediately.  There are blood pressure cups in pharmacies that will allow a person to check his or her own blood pressure.  This is a wonderful way to help keep an eye on it especially if a person has never had high blood pressure problems in the past.  These little stools set up to check the blood pressure are usually free and  can also bring with it peace of mind or a warning the person may not already be aware of.
