How to Choose the Type of Treatment Someone Needs

How do you choose the type of treatment someone needs?  Just as you would choose an Oncologist for cancer, just as you would choose a cardiologist for heart problems, you need the right treatment for the right addiction that someone has in order for it to get treated successfully.

Is the addiction alcohol or drug?  There is a program for each along with a program for the type of drug a person is addicted to, meaning that while the overall treatment plan is similar, there are classes or therapy sessions that focus on the actual drug a person is addicted to so that he or she can learn how to fight a relapse, how he became addicted to begin with and what the drug can ultimately do physically and psychologically to the body and mind.

Should a person choose inpatient or outpatient drug rehabilitation?  It is usually recommended that a person go with inpatient for the simple reason that it removes all temptation from the person's life while he or she is recovering.  The person is then able to concentrate fully on getting clean and learns the tools needed to successfully remain clean after treatment is over by then going into aftercare which is similar to outpatient treatment in that it keeps the person in a support environment such as group sessions where he or she has the support and communication with others who have been in his position and can keep him going during such times that he might be tempted to relapse.

Age can be a factor.  This means that teenagers should be in a treatment environment that benefits them.  They need to be treated by professionals who understand that teenagers are different from those in their 20s, 30s and 40s.  They are still in high school, they have different stressors and they are frankly minors and their experiences are different than those of someone who goes bar hopping or works in a Fortune 500 company.

A treatment program should offer family involvement.  While the person is concentrated on within the center, it is also known that families need support, too.  Once detox and the initial treatment has begun, opening up four times of family counseling is important to the addict's successful recovery as well.

Where there is care, there should be aftercare.  Treatment should not be just during the getting clean phase but should continue after the person has left the facility.  Maintaining an aftercare plan is paramount to the person's success.  By getting involved with a group that deals with his form of addiction, he will have the peer support he needs when a stressor pops up that could tempt him to relapse.

Choosing the right treatment someone needs is fairly easy when you follow through on what is best for all involved, especially the person who is addicted.  Getting the loved one back that you remembered from before the drug took control will be the greatest prize of all in the end.
