Information on GHB Detox in Canada

GHB is considered a club drug and is also know in the media as a date rape drug. GHB is a central nervous system depressant and was actually approved by the FDA in 2002 for treatment of narcolepsy (sleep disorder). These types of club drugs are used at raves, night clubs, dance clubs, and trances. They are very inexpensive, but can give a very intoxicating effect on the individual. GHB is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, which is why it is well known as a date rape drug. It can be added to beverages and the person drinking the beverage will not know the drug is even in their drink. When mixed with alcohol this drug can incapacitate the person and prevent them from resisting sexual assault.

Adverse Side Effects of GHB

High dosages of GHB act as a sedative and can cause sleep, coma, or death. GHB withdrawal is very uncomfortable psychologically, and repeated use can lead to very severe detox symptoms such as:
  • insomnia
  • tremors
  • sweating
  • anxiety

GHB can also cause seizures combined with the use of other drugs and alcohol, and can also result in nausea and difficulties breathing. There is no clear GHB detection tests used in emergency rooms, but people who are admitted can appear to have a series of mixed problems. In-house treatment or detox is the best method to handle a GHB withdrawal. There are many detox centers in Canada that can take care of GHB abuse and addiction.

GHB detox can take effect within hours after use and can last for one to two days, depending on the amount the person has used. In some cases medications are given to help counter act the effects, keeping the person calm during detox. Typically when monitored all through out the day and night, there will be no immediate problems.

Most drug rehab centers are equipped to handle a person detoxing off of GHB. In the more severe cases where a person has previous medical or health problems, doctor or medical supervision will be necessary.
