Crack Cocaine Addiction Rehab Treatment, Lethbridge, Alberta, Crack Detox Program Lethbridge, AB

The Lethbridge Regional Police Service notes that charges for cocaine and crack cocaine trafficking and possession have been steadily increasing since 2002. While it may appear that other types of drug trafficking and possession are decreasing, the fluctuation in numbers is a result of concentrating policing efforts on the “harder drugs”, such as crack cocaine.

With the large population, there is a large drug scene in the city. In the poorer areas of the city, crack is prevalent. Crack is the street name for cocaine that has been processed from the powdered hydrochloride form to a smokable substance. Crack is often processed with ammonia or baking soda and water, and heated to remove the hydrochloride.

Because it is smoked, the user experiences a high in less than 10 seconds. Crack has become popular because of the almost immediate high, and because it is relatively inexpensive. It is inhaled and rapidly absorbed through the lungs, into the blood, and carried swiftly to the brain. The risks of overdosing are greater, and can result in coma, convulsions, and even death.

This drugs high often only lasts between five to seven minutes of intense pleasure and rapidly subsides, leading to the feeling of depression that can only be overcome with more crack cocaine. This is a vicious cycle that increases the chances of addiction and dependency; with many abusers obsessed with finding ways to get more crack cocaine. Psychologically, the drug decreases concentration, ambition, drive, and increases confusion and irritability, wreaking havoc on abusers' professional and personal lives.

The detox period from crack will typically last one to three days, depending on the length of binge the person is coming off of. The majority of time during detox the user is spending eating and sleeping, as they were doing neither when using the drug. In some cases benzodiazepines are given to help calm the user down during the crack cocaine detox period.

Due to the severity of withdrawal symptoms, it is highly advised that addicts go to a crack cocaine detox center or a crack rehab treatment in order to get off the drugs safely. Even if a person goes to a crack detox, it is often encouraged that they go through a full crack rehab treatment in order to address all aspects of their addiction.
