Prescription Drug Detox in Manitoba
When most of the addicts that live in Manitoba decide that it is time to check them into a drug rehabilitation program, they simply have to do it. The first step is always the same; they just enter a drug detox facility and then the rehabilitation program. It is works a little differently if the addict is not addicted to drugs like heroin, pot, and crack/cocaine. If the person has managed to become addicted to prescription drugs the process has a different starting point. The sooner the person is able to get help for their prescription drug addiction the better. An addiction to prescription drugs almost always causes the person to do something illegal like stealing prescription pads. The sooner they realize that they have a problem and get into treatment the less chance that they will end up with a permanent criminal record.
The person cannot simply walk into any of the drug detoxification programs in Manitoba and get admitted. The prescription drug detox is much longer.
The first thing the addict is going to have to do is approach their doctor and tell them about their prescription addiction. For most addicts this is the hardest part. The minute they make their confession they start to worry that their doctor is judging them. The doctor will want to know how long the addict has been taking the prescription drugs and for how long. Based on this information, the doctor will try to come up with a plan that will allow the addict to gradually wean themselves from the drug. The addict should expect to be closely monitored by everyone during this period of time.
Once the doctor thinks it is safe to do so, the doctor will encourage the addict to enter one of Manitoba’s drug detox programs. Although the addict has been gradually removing themselves from the drug, this does not mean that the detoxification is going to be easy. They are still going to be hitting withdrawal and they will still most likely become very ill. For their own safety, the addict needs to do this in a professionally staffed facility where the counselors can watch and make sure that the addict does not hit their head or do something else to hurt themselves. After the detoxification process the addict will be sent to a rehabilitation center where they will start the actual recovery process.
