What is Marijuana?

In Canada, 14 per cent of the population said that they had used marijuana over the last year, that can lead to marijuana addiction. In fact, more than half of those reported a regular use of marijuana, which is a sign of marijuana addiction. The age bracket in which most of the marijuana addiction starts is between the age of 18 and 19 years old. According to a survey done in 2004, 44.5 per cent of the whole population said that they had tried marijuana at least once in their lives. More than 18 per cent of those admitted to using cannabis every single day, this is a lot and shows a strong addiction.

In the Northwest Territories, there was a survey made in 2004 which showed that the rates of cannabis used in the preceding year were higher than other provinces in Canada. In the age bracket of 15 and 24, almost 47 per cent of them reported using cannabis in the last year. A little over 39 per cent of them were struggling with marijuana addiction, using it daily or weekly. In Ontario, especially in Toronto, they conducted a survey on young students in 2005, 26.5 per cent of the students from Grade 7 to Grade 12 said to have used marijuana in the last years. And in those, 15 per cent of those admitted using marijuana regularly and so developing an addiction for it.

In 2004, in Quebec almost half of the population have touched marijuana once in their lives. There were 7.2 per cent more people that abuse marijuana compared to a decade ago, and  marijuana addiction is a real problem in Quebec. Montreal and Quebec City are two of the biggest cities in the province and so are touched significantly by marijuana addiction. In 2002, there were more males than females that were hospitalized because of marijuana addiction.

In Nova Scotia during the year 2003, there has been over 14 per cent of the population who said they used marijuana at least once in their lives. Among those, there were over 43 per cent who have developed an addiction to marijuana and use it regularly. In the province of Alberta, there was 48.7 per cent of the population that tried marijuana. Within those, there were over 18 per cent that have developed an addiction to marijuana.

Marijuana is a drug that is very popular for recreational use and about ten per cent of those people will develop an addiction for the drug. Although marijuana is not one of the most addictive drugs, it is still very hard for a marijuana addict to quit the drug. They like their lifestyle and so their marijuana addiction is pretty strong.
