Most of the drug treatment facilities in Calgary are going to use a type of therapy that is called cognitive behavior counseling to help the addict move past their addiction. The idea of this type of counseling is to force the addict to examine their emotions and thoughts. Through this type of examination, the hope is that the individual will be able to discover why they became addicted to methamphetamine. Once the person understands the nature of their methamphetamine addiction, the counselor will continue to work with the addict and help them identify and cope with triggers that could cause the addict to turn to methamphetamine once they have been released from the program.

Cognitive behavior counseling is not meant to go on forever. It has a time limit. Most drug rehab programs have set up their programs in such a way that the addict should be able to be released after twenty-eight days. At this point they are encouraged to participate in one of Calgary’s outpatient drug rehab programs where they will receive further counseling and also get help adjusting to the world again.
