Narcotics Anonymous Co-Founder – Jimmy Kinnon

Jimmy Kinnon was born on April 5th 1911. While he was in school, he started drinking alcohol and abusing illicit drugs. It was tearing his life apart and in February 2nd 1950, he decided to get clean from both alcohol and drugs.  This is when he started attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. AA fellowship philosophy was that it was to focus only on alcohol addiction. Therefore, speaking of drug addiction or any other kind of addiction was discouraged in the meetings.

Jimmy K. met others members in AA had struggled with drug addiction in the past. He and other members started putting together their own meetings to address drug addiction. They of course, were not yet called Narcotic Anonymous. But Jimmy and the other members wanted to start a fellowship for drug addiction as many people suffered from it.

In 1953, they were given permission by the Alcoholics Anonymous organization to use the 12 steps and 12 traditions for their own fellowship. It is then that Alcoholics Anonymous was formed officially. Jimmy K. continued to help people with drug addiction which also helped them stay sober. He stayed focused on his goal of creating this fellowship even through the rough times.

of 1985, at the age of 74 years old. He had stayed clean from alcohol and drugs for 35 years at the time he passed away.
