Alcohol addiction information and situation in New Brunswick
There was a survey done in 2001-2002 on the seniors in New Brunswick to find out how much alcohol was drunk. The survey found out that 51.8 per cent of the population over 55 years old had drunk alcohol in the past 12 months. That statistic is actually lower than the country’s average, which is 74 per cent. It is more of a problem within the male seniors than the female seniors, 65.8 per cent compared to 43.8 per cent. It would also seem that as the population grows older, the rate of alcohol consumption goes down. Where alcohol addiction is concerned, 5.4 per cent showed alcohol addiction symptoms such as daily consumption. The survey also showed that 1.8 per cent of the New Brunswick seniors were frequent heavy drinkers, which shows an addiction to alcohol that could be dangerous for both the body and the mind.
But it’s not only the elderly which show signs of alcohol problems. Alcohol use and abuse starts at a very young age. Although the legal drinking age is 19 years old, a lot of incidents have happened where illegal drinking was involved. In a survey in 2004, the rates were at 8.5 per cent when it came to frequent heavy alcohol use, which is higher than the Canadian average of 7.1 per cent. And the alcohol use of the general population has remained fairly stable over the years, unfortunately alcohol addiction has not gone down significantly enough over the last few years. This is why there needs to be more alcohol addiction treatments available in New Brunswick so that people of all ages who are suffering from alcoholism can get real help.
In New Brunswick in 2003, there were over 100 people who died in crashes on the road. Out of those, 41.7 per cent were directly caused by somebody abusing alcohol. There were also 170 people who were injured in road accidents, and 82 per cent of them were because of alcohol usage on the road. There were also a lot of multi vehicle accidents and that took the lives of 277 people in New Brunswick. And out of all those, 10.5 per cent of these were directly related to alcohol. So this shows that alcohol addiction and alcohol misuse is very dangerous for both the one who drinks but also to innocent people.
