New Brunswick Drug Detox

Detoxification is a very important part of the drug rehabilitation process. This is the point where the addict purges their body of the drugs that they have been taking.  It is not unusual for many residential drug rehabilitation programs to refuse to accept anyone who has not completed the detoxification process.

The longer and more frequently an addict has used drugs, the more dependent their body and mind has become on them. It does not matter how much will power the individual has when they make the decision to wean themselves from drugs, they are going to go through a period of illness. The average addict gets far too sick to be able to focus on anything else. There is no way that any counseling would work at this point. It is far better for the addict to be purged of the drugs before they are admitted into one of New Brunswick’s residential rehab program.

Nova Scotia only has 6 detoxification programs. There is an estimated 20,000 people who should be getting help for some type of drug addiction. This means that there are lots of times when an addict will not be able to simply check themselves into a facility, when their name will be placed on a waiting list. If the addict is on a waiting list, there are some things that they can do which will make the detoxification process easier. The first is taking some meditation and yoga classes. Another would be eating a diet that is rich in potassium. Consuming plenty of bananas will help ease cramping and may help lessen some of the addicts nausea. Right before the addict is formally admitted into the program they should drink a great deal of water which will help reduce the chances of them becoming dehydrated. The better prepared the addict is going into the drug detox program, the easier it will be for them to ride out the side effects.

Individuals should not even consider the possibility of going through the drug detoxification process on their own. They need to get themselves admitted into one of New Brunswick’s six detoxification programs. Getting checked into one of these programs will ensure that there is no possible way for the addict to get their hands on any drugs, no matter how desperately they might want them. The second reason to check into the drug detox center is because the staff is trained to keep the patient safe as they go through the symptoms of withdrawal.
