Drug Detox in Newfoundland

There are approximately 500,000 people who currently call Newfoundland home. It is estimated that 11.6% of the population is addicted to cannabis and that another 0.9% are struggling with an addiction to crack/cocaine. In a way these numbers are encouraging since they are well below the national average. Still, it would be nice if they were lower. The goal of the Newfoundland legislation should be to have every single addict well on their way towards recovery.

Right now, one of the biggest problem facing the newfoundlanders is that getting into a formal detoxification program can be difficult. The province only has one drug detox and the facility is very busy. The addicts should consider going to a facility in one of the neighboring provinces.

Before the drug addicts get into a drug rehab they will first need to go through a detoxification process. This is a period of time when the person eliminates drugs from their body. Since the addicts have developed a chemical dependency to the drug, the person can expect to be very ill during this period of time.

All of the experts will recommend that individuals check themselves into a supervised detoxification program. By checking themselves into a formal program instead of trying to wean themselves from the drugs, the person will be surrounded by people who have a great deal of experience helping individuals get through the detoxification. These people will make sure that the person is safe and does not get hurt during the first phase of the rehabilitation program.
