Nova Scotia Drug Detoxification

Sometimes the drug addicts think that they can skip some of the steps from a standard drug rehabilitation program. The step they often want to omit is the drug detox process. This usually ends up being a really bad idea.

Any person who has ever gone through a drug detoxification program will mention that it was not an easy experience. Prolonged drug use alters the user’s brain chemistry, making it think that it constantly needs a fresh infusion of the drug in order to function properly. When the brain is denied the drugs it responds with violence.

Although the exact reaction a drug addict has to the detoxification process, nearly all of them get sick, really sick, the kind of sick that makes people wish they could just curl up and die. When a person gets this ill it is impossible for them to focus on anything other than their sickness and desire to get to some drugs. Since the person will not be able to focus on the counseling they need to have in order to overcome their addiction until after the sickness has passed, there is no point in them taking up a bed at a residential program.

The length of time that a person needs to spend at one of Nova Scotia’s three drug detoxification facilities depends on the person. Different people respond different to drugs. The length of time the person has been using and the type of drug they are addicted to.

Nova Scotia only has three drug detox facilities. Since there are so few facilities the addict is going to have to plan ahead. Unless they live near one of the facilities they are going to have to arrange for transportation. Not only do they need to get to the facility, they are also going to need a ride from the detoxification facility to the rehabilitation. The person who drives the addict to both places needs to be someone reliable who cares for the addict’s well being and wants to make sure that they get the help they need.

Working out is one of the best things a person can do while they are waiting for their body to purge the drugs. Not only does aerobic exercise help alleviate boredom it also help increase the patient’s heart rate which can speed up the detoxification process.
