Alcohol addiction information and situation in Northwest Territories

There are a lot of people that have an alcohol problem, to different degrees. In 2006, there was a survey done on the population of Northwest Territories and 78 per cent of them said they drank alcohol during the year. But those rates have stayed stable over the last decade. And out of those people, there were different degrees of alcohol consumption. Out of those people, 22 per cent rarely drank alcohol, less than once a month. There were also 33 per cent that drank more than once a month, but less than once a week, which is acceptable as far as alcohol consumption goes. Unfortunately, there were 29 per cent displayed signs of alcoholism, drinking alcohol very frequently. Those people drank alcohol more than once a week. Furthermore, there were 50 per cent of them who reported that in a single occasion, they would take at least five drinks, which is called heavily drinking. There were also 23 per cent that admitted to drinking a lot, such as 3 to 4 drinks per sittings. Heavy frequent drinking rates have gone up from 1996 to 2006, by at least 10 per cent, this is an alarming fact that should be dealt with.

There are also some hazards that come with drinking alcohol, and those hazards can affect both the drinker himself, and the people around the person. There are 21 per cent of the drinkers that have seen that their own drinking has brought on damage to themselves and others. For example, 10 per cent said that their drinking had affected their social life, and another 10 per cent said that alcohol had damaged their physical health. But the drinking of others can also affect a person’s life. Actually, 53 per cent of the Northwest Territories population have suffered from someone else’s drinking. The most common and unfortunate experiences are heavy arguments (29 per cent), physical attacks (10 per cent), marital problems (17 per cent), and insults and verbal abuse (around 30 per cent). Those are only some of the problems that are caused by too much alcohol drinking.

It is illegal to drive while being under the influence of alcohol or any other drug. But the law isn’t necessarily as strict or the penalties as big as in other provinces. First off, if a person in Northwest Territories gets caught driving while under the influence of alcohol, there’s a 4 to 24 hour roadside suspension at first. That is if your
BAC
is over .05. Plus if there’s a Criminal Code offense involved, your license will be revoked for an additional three months. This license suspension penalty is actually not as bad as one might find in other provinces. And if the offender commits a second Criminal Code offense with alcohol involved, his license will be revoked for a full six months, but only if that was less than five years after the first DUI offense. But the third DUI offense will get the offender a full year off the road. Those are the standard laws for DUI offenses, but depending on the circumstances, such as fatalities, the court could sentence the person to a worsened suspension if it is warranted.
