Prince Edward Island Drug Detoxification

Even though the number of drug addicts in Prince Edward Island is significantly lower than the national average, the province cannot ignore the fact that there are drug addicts living there who are in need of help. The better access the drug addicts have to drug rehabilitation programs and detoxification centers, the greater their chances are of overcoming their drug addiction.

When the average person thinks of helping someone with drug addiction, they usually think in terms of the rehabilitation program.  However the detoxification is also a very vital step of the recovery process. Because there are so few addicts that call the province home, there is currently just one detoxification program on the island.

Even though the province only has one drug detox center, very few people have trouble getting in. The facility is very good about finding space for anyone who needs help. This is good news, because none of the provinces government funded rehabilitation programs will accept any addict who has not been sober for at least one week.

The average waiting period to get into the PEI detoxification center is usually one or two days. If a person needs help overcoming their addiction they need to contact the facility right away.

No addict should even consider going through the detoxification process on their own. At first this might seem like a reasonable plan, but the long term exposure has caused the individual’s mind and body to develop a dependence on the drugs, as the drugs work themselves out of the body, the addict will become very ill. The urge to get start using will become too strong for the addict to ignore. They will not be able to complete the process.

When the addict gets themselves enrolled in PEI’s detox program, they will not have any choice. They will not be able to get out of the facility. No matter how bad the cravings get, no matter how sick they get, the individual will stay put.

Safety is another reason why the addict needs to be in the detox program instead of taking care of it on their own. As the drugs seep from the bloodstream, most people become ill, violently ill. The two biggest risks during this time are that the person will get dehydrated or that they will hit their head. The professionals that run the program will monitor the addict, and make sure that they are not in any danger.
