Prescription Drugs Detox and Treatment for Edmonton, Alberta

Edmonton took a unique approach in its fight against all drugs, including prescription drugs. Edmonton, the capital of Alberta with just over a million residents has created its own Drug Treatment and Community Restoration Court. This system allows people in trouble with the law, due to any type of drug to get out of facing any legal trouble. The deal is that they have to plead guilty to what they are charged of, have no history of violent crime, and go into a drug treatment program. These addicts are given probation, and can go home, as long as they continue to go to treatment at least once a week. Conditions of probation usually are that the person remains clean of all drugs.

Illegal drugs are down among youth; however prescription-drug abuse is on the rise. More than fifteen percent of high-school students report that they have used a prescription drug (that they themselves were not prescribed) such as Oxycontin or Vicodin for the purpose of getting high or to help with sleep problems. In Alberta, there is an act that allows youth to pursue help without fear of legal ramifications if they are addicted. Most of these youth after being released from the five-day program, voluntarily stay in treatment.

People prescribed narcotics need to be made aware of the risks of addiction before they take the medication. Prescription-drug addiction commonly happens by someone not wanting to seem like they are an addict, and so they do not talk to their doctor when the prescription no longer works. Instead, they doctor shop, or find a friend who has a prescription. It is important that someone who is prescribed a prescription addictive drug talks to their doctor instead of upping the dose or mixing it with other medications. The leading cause of overdose death in Canada is accidental and caused by prescription drugs. That's why there are many drug rehab centers in Edmonton to fight prescription-drug addiction.
