One headline catches the attention when searching for cocaine in Sherwood Park, Alberta. RCMP put three months of undercover work to good use last week, with a massive seizure of cocaine, cash, marijuana, guns, knives and counterfeit money. “We believe that this significant drug seizure has dismantled a major supplier of cocaine in Sherwood Park,” said RCMP media liaison Const. Wally Henry at a press conference on Friday.
Police have arrested seven people, four of which come from Sherwood Park. During the raid, police seized 1.5 kg of cocaine, a sawed-off shotgun, $65,000 of cash, a small amount of marijuana and other weapons and drug paraphernalia from two Park homes and one home in Edmonton. Henry wasn’t able to give a street value of drugs, but stated all drugs, regardless of the value, are detrimental to the community. That is why there is a big need for cocaine addiction treatments in Sherwood Park.
Henry said the criminal ring, based in Sherwood Park, was a distribution network for the drugs. He said currently there are no known links to any gangs in Edmonton or elsewhere, but the investigation is still ongoing. He said the group charged was responsible for the “vast majority of cocaine trafficking in Sherwood Park.”
“Having first-hand knowledge of lives and families destroyed, I think that any drug use is a problem in any community,” he said. Henry said the counterfeit money — old style $20 bills — was found in the different residences but there was no evidence any of the accused were actually making the counterfeit bills. The raid was the work of the local drug unit and between six and 10 officers were involved in the operation. At the press conference, the police displayed the items that were seized in the raid. That included stacks of mostly $20 bills, the counterfeit bills, the cocaine, which had been divided into small baggies, three guns, ammunition, two knives and two bongs. The police officials promise that they are going to be vigilant in seeking out individuals who are distributing drugs in the community.
