Definition of Steatosis
Steatosis is a situation in the fatty components of the liver. It is mostly caused by alcohol abuse and is one of the easiest diseases of the liver to get when alcoholism is involved. While insulin problems, hepatitis
and obesity can also be a factor, all of these combined are not as likely as alcohol abuse when it comes to steatosis
. This can permanently damage the liver, leading to a need for a transplant or death. A healthy liver that functions properly is a necessary vital organ and the destruction of the liver through steatosis makes it hard to save the patient most of the time.
The number-one thing to do when a person has been diagnosed with steatosis is to see if there is anyway to make sure the liver can function decently. If the steatosis turns into cirrhosis
, the likelihood of saving the liver is practically nil.
Just as many drugs can lead straight to damaging the heart or brain, alcohol does the greatest damage to the liver. Steatosis sets in and it is a fight to save the liver before permanent damage is done. Usually it is a subtle and quiet attack on the liver so by the time a person becomes aware of it, the damage is permanently done. The next step is frequently cirrhosis and ultimately death. This is not a pleasant thing to hear about, and the truth can be hard to deal with. However, the bottom line is, if you are an alcoholic or know someone who is, it is very important to get the person into an alcohol withdrawal treatment as soon as possible. Waiting until steatosis has been diagnosed could very well be too late. What is steatosis? It's the final step before cirrhosis sets in. Do the right thing for yourself and your loved ones and seek treatment right away.
