Crack Cocaine Use on the Rise in Vancouver, British Columbia
A study by the Urban Health Research Initiative at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS has discovered an alarming trend in the growth of crack cocaine use in Vancouver, British Columbia. Despite a ten year battle against drugs in the city the rates of crack cocaine users in the city has continued to grow. Even more alarming is the increasing mortality for needle users. Since many crack cocaine users share dirty needles they have a higher risk for spreading any disease that this communicable through blood.
Crack cocaine is one of the most addictive drugs being used today. It’s extremely easy for anyone to become addicted to this powerful drug in a short amount of time. Before someone knows it’s they are doing anything necessary to score their next fix . They will steal from their family, friends, and commit other crimes to fund their addictions. Unfortunately many people have to hit rock bottom before they even consider seeking any form of drug treatment or rehab for their substance abuse problems.
Several members of the study have called upon Ottawa to return to the four-pillar drug treatment policy that Vancouver adopted in 2001. This program was designed to fight drug abuse on several levels including prevention and treatment. It aimed to both reduce the number of new users while simultaneously reducing the current number of substance users in the city.
Vancouver has several different rehab and recovery programs available for anyone that is suffering from drug abuse to attend. These drug rehab centers can offer specialized addiction treatment that can provide drug users with the skills they need to kick the habit for good. While it may seem that the war on drugs is failing, it’s not lost. With the support of a good abuse treatment anyone can beat their addiction and finally get life back on track.
