What Is Drug Addiction Treatment?
Drug addiction treatment is not used by the large number of people. A lot of facilities have been created for treatment of problems related to drug addiction but unfortunately most of it remains unutilized. Even those who have utilized the facilities have gone there only because the person affected has become afflicted with severe mental problems. No one has approached these centers for treating patients for abnormal behavioral patterns and minor changes in physical appearance. The reason perhaps may be fear of stigma being attached to the family if a person belonging to the family has to be admitted to a mental institution, which is what people generally term addiction rehabilitation centers.
The treatment at the center consists of encouraging the patient to practice abstinence and for the prevention of relapse and finally rehabilitation. Abstinence will show withdrawal symptoms and immediate medical help is required. This process is called Detoxification or Detox for short. This has to be done in a hospital under medical supervision. The main purpose of detox is to reduce the symptoms of withdrawal. During the stay at the hospital, medical monitoring can be done frequently the medication depends on the substance that has become the cause for addiction and also the external symptoms noticed. These symptoms might be palpitations, BP, seizers etc. Seizers can happen during detoxification also.
Apart from the physical aspects the rehabilitation center provides psychological help also the patient had to be helped into believing that he can get rid of the addiction with the medication and also his own willpower. With less severe symptoms mild medication and psychological treatment as an outpatient may be sufficient but people with severe addiction problems and also a relapse after outpatient treatment have to be admitted for thorough investigation and further treatment. It is an encouraging factor that most of the drug treatments have produced good results and many addicts have benefited.
