Christian rehab isn't just standard treatment with a chapel service added on. Quality programmes integrate evidence-based therapies like CBT and motivational interviewing with scripture-based reflection, pastoral counselling, peer community rooted in shared faith, and often vocational training. The faith dimension is treated as a genuine part of recovery, not a replacement for clinical care, but an addition to it. For people whose faith is central to who they are, that combination tends to produce stronger engagement and better long-term outcomes than a programme that ignores it entirely.
For 12-step programmes like AA, belief in God is not a requirement. The concept of a higher power is intentionally open-ended, and atheists and agnostics regularly benefit from the fellowship and structure. Christian rehab is a bit different: these programmes are explicitly faith-centred, so someone with no interest in Christianity is unlikely to find them a good fit. But for someone who is spiritually curious, lapsed in their faith, or somewhere on the journey rather than fully committed, many Christian programmes are welcoming rather than exclusive.

One thing I have always respected about 12-step and religious programs is that they address spirituality, something that a lot of newer approaches completely skip over. The tendency now is to focus on the brain, the mechanics, the neuroscience. That is fine, but the person is still the one lighting the joint or picking up the drink. Working on the person, including who they are and what they believe and what gives them a reason to stay sober, is at least as important as understanding what is happening in their brain.
What I have noticed over the years is that the longer the faith-based or spiritual program is, the more successful it tends to be. A 9-month or 12-month Christian residential program gives someone time to actually change how they see themselves and their life. That does not happen in 30 days.
My only caution is that for some people, a bad experience with religion in the past will make them resistant to this kind of program. If that is the case, a 12-step program or a secular residential program may be a better fit. The goal is for the person to get sober and get their life back. The path there has to be one they can actually walk.
