About this center

Alcove Addiction Recovery Centre for Women is a long-term, residential recovery environment in Calgary, Alberta dedicated to helping women break the cycle of addiction, trauma, and mental health distress. Operating as a registered charity, Alcove has been a safe haven for women, including those with young children, since the early 1970s, providing support in a home-like setting where personal restoration and resilience can grow.

A Structured, Trauma-Informed Residential Experience

The core of Alcove’s programming is its highly structured, 12-week residential program that blends trauma-informed care with peer-supported living. The environment feels more like community living than a clinical setting, with participants encouraged to engage deeply in personal growth and life rebuilding alongside professional counsellors.

Keeping Families Together While Healing

A distinctive feature of Alcove is its family-inclusive recovery model. Women who are pregnant or parenting children under six are able to remain together with their children during the recovery process, an approach shown to strengthen healing outcomes and maintain family bonds while addressing addiction and trauma. Parent training and relationship-building activities are integrated into daily life to support both mothers and their children as they move toward independence.

Holistic Support Guided by Compassion and Empowerment

Beyond residential care, Alcove offers online programs and continued support that help women transition back into community life or deepen their recovery at key moments. The program’s guiding principles emphasize acceptance and accountability, encouraging participants to build confidence and the practical skills needed for sustained wellness after treatment.

A Safe Community for Women Rebuilding After Trauma and Addiction

Alcove is well suited for women who have experienced overlapping challenges such as trauma, abuse, and mental health struggles alongside addiction. The setting’s emphasis on shared community, family support, and trauma-responsive care offers a stable, compassionate space for women ready to engage deeply in long-term personal change.
