Amethyst Women’s Addiction Centre

Amethyst Women’s Addiction Centre was the first habit treatment centre of its kind in Canada when it opened its doors in 1979 in Ottawa, Ontario. The centre, a non-profit charitable organization, was founded in order {to offer community-based drug rehab programs recovery services to address the unique issues affecting women coping with substance abuse and/or problem gambling. Amethyst is grounded in the feminist belief that women’s experience with alcohol, drugs and gambling cannot be separated from our experiences and status as women. We make direct links between the unequal position of women in society, the various forms of violence against women and substance use and/or gambling.
