Stony Creek is a residential youth group care program operated by Nightwind Treatment Centre in Athabasca County, Alberta, designed to support adolescents ages 12 to 18 facing behavioural, emotional, and addiction-related challenges. As an accredited child and youth group living program, Stony Creek blends trauma-informed clinical care with nature-based and culturally responsive activities to help young people build stability, emotional regulation, and healthy life skills.
A Rural Residential Setting That Encourages Real-World Growth
Situated in the Tawatinaw Valley, Stony Creek provides a 7-bed, co-ed live-in environment where daily routines, therapeutic engagement, and life-skills learning are woven into everyday living. This rural setting allows participants to step away from high-risk environments and focus on recovery, connection, and personal reflection within a structured and supportive community.
Therapeutic and Experiential Focus With Outdoor Integration
Unlike traditional residential programs that take place entirely indoors, Stony Creek uniquely integrates outdoor education, agriculture, and physical activity into the recovery experience. These nature-oriented components are paired with group and individual counselling to help youth build emotional regulation, resilience, social skills, and a stronger sense of self in a way that complements traditional therapeutic work.
Cultural Awareness and Personal Development
Stony Creek emphasizes cultural awareness, self-identity, healthy relationships, and conflict resolution as core aspects of its programming. Staff work collaboratively with each young person and their referral source to tailor supports that reflect individual goals, strengths, and life circumstances, fostering deeper insight and sustainable change.
Part of a Continuum of Youth Recovery Supports
As part of Nightwind’s broader network of youth programs, Stony Creek offers a bridge within the continuum of care for adolescents who may transition from initial stabilization or move toward semi-independent living as they grow. The program’s holistic and trauma-informed approach supports young people in developing the tools needed for long-term growth, improved decision-making, and healthier daily routines.
A Residential Path Toward Emotional Strength and Stability
Stony Creek resonates with youth who benefit from a structured, nature-infused residential setting that balances therapeutic support with experiential learning. By combining trauma-aware care, physical activity, cultural awareness, and peer-supported living, the program offers a comprehensive pathway toward emotional resilience, healthier relationships, and a more stable life direction beyond active treatment.
