Port Alberni Friendship Centre – Addictions & Mental Health Counseling

Updated on: 28 January 2026

About this center

Port Alberni Friendship Centre’s Addictions & Mental Health Counselling program is an outpatient support service in Port Alberni, BC that helps adults (and families) whose substance use and mental health challenges have begun interfering with the lives they’re still living: work, relationships, routines, or emotional balance. It’s rooted in the community and meets people where they are, offering counselling that connects recovery work directly to everyday life rather than isolating it in hospital or residential settings.

Counselling That Meets You Where You’re At

People tend to come here when managing alcohol, drug use, or overlapping stress and emotional patterns on their own hasn’t held and the effects are showing up in real responsibilities: missed work, tension at home, or persistent stress. Port Alberni Friendship Centre’s counselling includes individual, couple, and group sessions that explore use patterns, mental health challenges, and coping strategies in a way that ties into what someone is still juggling.

Outpatient Support That Fits Into Daily Life

The program is designed as an outpatient service so clients can continue with work, family, and community roles while engaging in structured support. Counsellors use holistic, evidence-informed approaches that consider emotional wellbeing, substance use patterns, and life context together, not as separate problems to be “fixed” in isolation.

Navigating Substance Use and Mental Health Together

Rather than treating addiction and emotional health as completely separate, this service supports people in understanding how their mental health and substance use intersect and how that intersection shows up in daily life. It also helps families begin to make sense of patterns of use and plan steps forward that can hold up outside of counselling sessions.

A Practical Support for Real-Life Challenges

Port Alberni Friendship Centre’s Addictions & Mental Health Counselling is often used by adults and families who see that their current patterns are interfering with stability but who want structured, community-based support that fits into the life they’re still living: responsibilities, relationships, and roles included.
