About this center

Medically Supported Detox is a free, medically supervised withdrawal management program operated by the George Spady Society in Edmonton, Alberta. This centre provides a safe, structured environment for adults seeking to withdraw from alcohol or other drugs while stabilizing their health and preparing for the next stage of their recovery journey.

A Clinically Informed Start to Recovery

The program is located at the Aurora Centre on Stony Plain Road and includes 41 detox beds and 19 post-detox recovery beds where individuals can complete withdrawal under professional care. Staff work with each person to create a client-led care plan, offering support with withdrawal symptoms, managed medication, opioid agonist therapy initiation, and referrals to primary care, mental health services, and ongoing treatment.

Holistic Support Through Stabilization and Beyond

In addition to medical oversight, the detox program provides case management, therapeutic group sessions, peer support, cultural support, life-skills guidance, and system navigation. Care is trauma-informed and tailored to each individual’s readiness for change, helping people build insight into substance use challenges while beginning to explore longer-term recovery options.

Post-Detox Recovery and Transition Planning

After the acute withdrawal phase, individuals may transition into post-detox recovery beds designed to offer additional stability and support while they prepare to move on to residential treatment, outpatient recovery services, housing, or community support networks. Family involvement and discharge planning are also part of the transition process.

Accessible, No-Cost Care for Adults Ready to Change

This medically supported detox service is available without charge to adults needing help with withdrawal and early recovery, and no doctor’s referral is required. Intake is offered daily through triage, with flexibility for remote referrals from hospitals or community partners when needed.

A Foundation for Lasting Recovery Work

George Spady Society’s medically supported detox program resonates with adults seeking a stable, medically supervised start to recovery, providing medical stabilization, personalized support, and guided transition to continued care.
