About this center

Thorpe Recovery Centre is a long-standing non-profit residential addiction treatment facility located on a rural campus in Blackfoot, Alberta, about 10 km west of Lloydminster. Founded in 1975 and named for prominent community advocate Walter A. “Slim” Thorpe, the centre offers holistic, peer-focused care for adults 18 years and older seeking freedom from chemical and process addictions, including drugs, alcohol, gambling, and disordered eating.

A Therapeutic Residential Environment Where Recovery Is Lived

Thorpe Recovery Centre provides a structured residential setting rooted in a therapeutic community model. The campus, set on 34 acres with natural light, recreation spaces, and common areas, supports recovery through daily routines, shared experience, and immersive engagement in treatment planning, peer support, and community activities.

Multi-Phase Programming Designed for Lasting Change

The centre’s core residential addiction program typically spans 42 days, during which participants engage in group therapy, individual counselling, lectures, and therapeutic activities tailored to individual recovery goals. Modules address addiction and recovery, relationships, grief, relapse prevention, trauma, spirituality, and behavioural patterns, helping participants gain insight and develop skills for life beyond active dependence.

Medically Supported Transition and Continuing Care

In addition to the residential phase, Thorpe offers medically supported detoxification followed by continuing care extending for months beyond the initial program, supporting sustained recovery and smoother transitions back into daily life. Family programming and alumni supports further reinforce connection and long-term resilience.

Holistic, Person-Centred Support

The centre’s approach blends evidence-informed practices with peer culture and community values, encouraging residents to build self-awareness, identify behavioural drivers of addiction, and pursue meaningful personal growth. Care planning is collaborative, with counsellors and staff tailoring each individual’s pathway based on strengths, needs, and recovery readiness.

A Recovery Path for Adults Ready to Rebuild

Thorpe Recovery Centre resonates with adults who benefit from a co-ed residential recovery experience grounded in therapeutic community principles and a continuum of support. By combining structured care, community engagement, and continuing aftercare, the centre offers a comprehensive pathway toward lasting sobriety and improved well-being.
