Drug Addiction In Quebec

Quebec has always had problems with alcohol and drug addiction plaguing its streets. This could be because the notorious Hells Angels had made a permanent home in this province. However, now with all the arrests, more than one hundred and fifty, people are concerned the drug trade will be even worse than before. The fight for drug turf among smaller gangs could take more civilian casualties than those involved in the group as gunfire is exchanged. It is suspected though, that instead the Ontario branch of the Hells Angels will just move to Quebec and take over where the others left off.

Quebec itself though has a lower than the average rate of consumption of these drugs. This means that they are getting all the crime associated with the trade, including money laundering and prostitution while they ship out the product to the rest of Canada. Arrests have been made as far as BC and New Brunswick linked with organized crime in Quebec.

The people in Quebec who most frequently purchase and use any sort of illegal drugs are the eighteen and nineteen-year-olds. Quebec is paying attention to the numbers that are currently using, because it is a good prediction of what shape the province will be in, in a few years. This province is already very short any sort of treatment options, and it seems that more addicted people are up and coming. Currently, the estimated numbers of those that are addicted to a substance, whether it be alcohol or drugs are one hundred thousand people and rising.

Youth commonly have the "it can't happen to me" attitude that gets people in serious trouble. More than twenty percent of youth who report using either alcohol or drugs also report that they drive within an hour of using. This is leading to an increase in accidents and arrests. It also leads to increasing rates of alcohol and drug addiction in Quebec.
