Drug & Alcohol Rehab Programs for Inhalant Abuse in British Columbia
Inhalants are readily available, easy to get, and are in every home and workplace across Canada. Inhalants are a term that refers to various substances that someone will inhale to achieve the desired effect. These products include solvents, aerosol sprays, gases, and nitrites, such as prescription medicines. These products are found everywhere and include things such as spray paints, markers, glues, and cleaning fluids. Many of these products include psychoactive or mind-altering substances that immediately affect the person when inhaled. These products are easily abused by someone who wants to get high and feel the euphoric effects. Typically, inhalants are used by teens and young kids because of the accessibility of the products.
When you abuse inhalants, you breathe the fumes into your lungs through your nose and mouth; this is done through sniffing, snorting, bagging, or huffing. Bagging is placing the product in a plastic bag or garbage bag, such as gas, aerosols, and other toxic liquids and breathing in the fumes. Huffing is spraying a product into a paper bag and huffing the fumes from the bag. The effects created by the different inhalants do last for a few minutes, sometimes longer, which is why a drug user is constantly inhaling the product out of the bag. Throughout British Columbia, substance abuse affects people throughout the province. Inhalants are common drugs used by many of the homeless population, young people, such as teens and kids.
Some of the inhalant products include industrial or household products. These types of products include paint thinners or removers, dry-cleaning fluids, gasoline, and lighter fluid. There are also office supplies and solvents, such as correction fluids, glue, and felt-tip markers. Aerosols are commonly abused that include spray paints, hair or deodorant sprays, aerosol cleaning products, and vegetable oil sprays. Gases are found in household or commercial products that include butane lighters, propane tanks, and even whipped cream aerosols such as whippets, which are extremely popular among adolescents. Many products are used as anesthetics which include ether, chloroform, and nitrous oxide. Nitrates include video head cleaners, room odorizers, and leather cleaners.
All of the above-mentioned products can be inhaled to feel the psychoactive and euphoric effects and are extremely dangerous. Most inhalants directly affect the central nervous system , and most will slow down brain activity. Some of the initial results include slurred or distorted speech, lack of coordination, euphoria, and dizziness. It is even possible to experience hallucinations or delusions with repeated and constant use of inhalants. Most drug users will start to lose consciousness, vomit, feel nauseous, and experience headaches that will last for hours. Inhaling products such as these leads to deadly consequences, and much of the damage done cannot be reversed.
If you are struggling with an inhalant addiction in British Columbia, there are treatment solutions to help. Throughout the province, detox centers such as medical or traditional detox programs will help an addict work through the withdrawal symptoms. Depending on the amounts of drugs being abused and the types of inhalants, the withdrawal symptoms can either be severe or will require medically supervised detox. Following detox, an addict will have to attend an inpatient or outpatient drug rehab center. This is especially important if inhalant abuse is happening with adolescents or children. There are always reasons why they start to abuse these products, and often many of these adolescents are homeless, coming from abusive homes, or have a history of addiction.
