How Can Family Members Be Helped with Alcohol Addiction?

Alcohol addiction is a problem that has continued to grow in Alberta, and North America as a whole, since the turn of the century. However, it was not until the last 50 years that alcohol addiction has taken a turn for the worse. Drinking alcohol has spread from a social event to something that has continued to tear apart lives, families, and lead to death for millions of people.

Alcohol Addiction by the Numbers

In the province of Alberta alone the numbers concerning alcohol addiction are startling. A 2004 survey showed that over 93% of Albertans had experienced with alcohol on at least one occasion. This number is slightly higher than the entire Canadian average. The survey also showed that the average age of an Alberta resident to experiment with alcohol was seventeen years of age.

While these numbers are gripping, there is also the fact that almost 40% admit to drinking alcohol at least once, and usually more, each week. Alcohol addiction is something that has come to almost epidemic proportions in Alberta.

Family Members Struggling With Alcohol Addiction

Chances are a major portion of the people who are addicted to alcohol, or use on a frequent basis, are a part of a larger family. When a family is in the midst of dealing with addiction, it can strain a lot of the relationships and bonds that are present. Sometimes these bonds are severed for a long period of time without little hope of reconciliation. Because of this, there are some strategies that will help to bridge the gap between addict and family, while also getting the afflicted some treatment.

Be Committed

Unless you are fully committed to helping your family member defeat their alcohol addiction, you will not be able to put up with the disappointments, anger, change of personality, and even outbreaks of violence. Treating alcohol addiction is a process that has to go through the different stages before a final breakthrough can happen. A committed, united, family can withstand many of the pitfalls and setbacks.

Partner With Counselors

Another strategy that will you deal with a family member who has an alcohol addiction is to seek help from a qualified alcohol counselor. Do not just enlist them to do the work, but partner with them in helping the addict see that they have a problem, want to get help, and then persevere through the treatment for alcoholism.

Give Place to Stay

When there is a person addicted to alcohol within a family, there is going to a disruption. Lives, while not stopping entirely, need to slow down in order to focus on helping the person who is addicted. This means giving the person a place to live while being treated. They must be watched, talked to, kept active, and loved, through this time or the consequence will be falling further into their addiction because of self-loathing and failure. Opening up a home, and being there, is a powerful way to treat alcohol addicts.

A family member who struggles with alcohol addiction is going to need a lot of help to defeat this powerful hold on them. When you are committed, partner with a counselor, and open up your home, you are giving them a fantastic chance of recovery.
