What Is the History of Cocaine?

Cocaine use is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. It has invaded every area from cities to the most rural of communities. Cocaine, however, is not something new. It has been used by South American Indians for thousands of years. It was introduced in the form of leave that Indians would chew on for a sudden rush of energy, medicine, and help with sacred rituals. However, in the late 1800s, people began to experiment with the drug to isolate the actual part that caused the euphoric sensations.

Cocaine treatments in Canada have become more popular in the last 15 years.

In the 1860s, scientists were able to extract the cocaine from the plant. This was distributed as a medicine to help cure ailments such as depression, anxiety, and morphine addictions. After several years of using the drug for these ailments, it was found that the drug had many long-term effects that made it too dangerous to use as a medicine.

During the 1920s, the drug made a decline in the United States but was still heavily used in other areas like South America, Central America, and across the Atlantic. Trade, while not heavy, was becoming to be a part of major crime in these areas. In the intervening years, the drug made determined to be illegal, but there was not a big demand for the drug in the early 1900s.

In the 1970s, cocaine began to be reintroduced to the public again, and it took off. The price was very high, because of the low supply and high demand. However, within a few years, the price came down as more cocaine was imported giving more people, from the inner cities to the very rural areas of the country, access to this drug.

Drug trafficking in cocaine was something that many crime syndicates did not want to get involved in at the beginning. However, when it was seen how much money could be made, usually by foreign crime gangs, then more highly sophisticated operations were put into place. Today, cocaine is a major drug that totals in the trillions of dollars in sales per year. While the drug is not officially sanctioned by any government, there is some protection given to the drug lords because of the revenue that is brought into the government.

Cocaine addiction is rising at an alarming pace while people are continuing to experiment with cocaine use. While cocaine was once a heavy drug for people who have never tried drugs before, it is now an entry-level type of drug that hooks millions each year.
