How Do You Choose an Alcohol Treatment Center?
The day is here. You or your loved one has finally admitted that there is a problem, you are an alcoholic. It has taken over your life, and you have no control or say so. You need help overcoming your alcoholism. That is the first step. Still, you need to make another important decision: you need to choose an alcohol rehab plan. So how do you do that?
First, you need to decide whether inpatient or outpatient is best for you. The truth is, success rates are higher for those who choose a residential treatment plan. Why? All temptations are removed while you detox your body totally of alcohol, and you are removed from the stressors of everyday life as you learn the tools needed to stay clean after your recovery in order to avoid a relapse.
Something some people do not think about but, which is very important is the type of care a treatment program will offer. Some do medical treating; some do not. Their philosophies are good but you have to decide, which is right for you. One that offers detox without medicating you with something else could work if the center offers a doctor to check that it is safe to treat you in this manner. If that is the case, then you know that you have chosen a good treatment center, because it is double-checking your safety and health first.
In many addiction cases, there is a problem of more than one mitigating factor. Make sure that the treatment center you are considering has a qualified staff of counselors and medical professionals. Their first priority will be in finding out how you are health-wise, and if you have a dual diagnosis situation. This is not uncommon because mental health is often affected by alcoholism and not just physical health such as the commonly known cirrhosis of the liver and other medical problems.
Something else just as important as getting clean is aftercare. Make SURE that the alcohol treatment program you are considering has an aftercare program and find out what it entails. If a center says, “okay, you are cured, thanks for choosing us” and then wishes you good-bye and good luck but does not offer you advice and support on aftercare, start running. A treatment center that celebrates your recovery and tells you honestly that there are going to be some rough days where you will be tempted to relapse but “good news, there is support in the outside world” and sets you up with the information for getting that support in a therapy, AA or other type of setting is the one you should seriously consider being the right one for you.
This shows you that you are not just a dollar sign or an insurance claim; you are real; you are important, and your success in aftercare is their success. How do you choose an alcohol treatment center? You go by how you are treated before, during and after. You speak to others who are enrolled or have been enrolled. You speak to the counselors. You go with your gut feeling. You make sure there is detox, there is medical aid if needed and there is aftercare.
