Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) In Nova Scotia

Within the province of Nova Scotia are many different drug and alcohol rehabilitation services and programs, which do include intensive outpatient centers. One of the counseling methods used at intensive outpatient programs includes cognitive behavior therapy, which helps patients create new ways of handling life, problem solving, and critical thinking. Much of this therapy helps patients stay away from negative influences, behavior, and how to handle the various emotions that will come up within their lives. Overall, this process allows an addict to manage their emotions, especially negative ones and will further help them to focus their energy on more positive aspects of their lives. Part of cognitive-behavioral therapy is individual counseling, as much of this treatment is done with the individual. For addicts living within Nova Scotia, it is important to locate the proper help, and in many cases this may be out of the province for some addicts and their families.

Part of treatment within any type of drug and alcohol rehabilitation center will be workshops, which help addicts discover new talents and abilities they may have, while still putting focus on their sobriety. Some of these workshops specifically address addiction, and provide the client with a better understanding of what addiction is. Part of achieving sobriety is maintaining that sobriety, and this is done by acquiring new and useful skills through some of these addiction workshops. In order to put this into motion within the real world, it will take practice, and this is why these new skills are practiced within a safe environment such as a drug rehab center, where the patient can gain the necessary confidence to succeed.

Some of the other activities that may take place within an intensive outpatient program can include:

  • Exercise and nutrition routines – it is very common that an addict is recommended new healthy lifestyle habits that include exercise and diet. This of course promotes a healthy body, which will help with healing the mind.
  • Re-connecting with nature – nature therapy is very successful, and will help a patient reconnect with his or her natural surroundings, making it easier to confront life.
  • Natural therapy – this can include yoga, massage therapy, acupuncture and other services to help heal an addict's body.
