Is Alcoholism Inherited?

Many people are wondering if alcoholism is genetic if it can be inherited. Well, studies have shown that it has the tendency of running in family, so genetics are some factors that can explain why some persons became alcoholic. Nowadays, the studies have gone even further, and scientists are trying to find the genes responsible for the vulnerability of alcohol. Still, the environment of a person, his stress levels and the ease of getting alcohol are factors in becoming an alcoholic. However, this isn’t a rule. It’s all about the choice in the end, because you can say no to the alcohol or drink with a limit at social events, and doesn’t mean that you will become an alcoholic. Many people find relaxing to have a drink when they get home or at a meal, but not all of them will develop a problem with alcohol. Furthermore, if you have a family history of alcoholism, it doesn’t mean that you will automatically become an alcoholic. There are cases when some people without any family history of alcoholism start drinking, and the ones that have alcoholic parents won’t drink. It’s all about how strong you are and how much you realize the bad effects of it.
