Is It True That Alcohol Is Good for Your Heart?
Some people say that alcohol is good for the heart. But is this just an excuse to drink or it is true? Well, studies have shown that drinking alcohol moderately, like one or two drinks daily are less likely to suffer from any heart disease, as opposed to those who don’t drink alcohol at all or drink too much. It has been reported that small amounts of alcohol can actually help protect against coronary heart disease. How is it possible? A small amount of alcohol will increase the level of HDL cholesterol, also known as good cholesterol, this way reducing the risk of blood clots in the coronary arteries. A glass of red wine is known to be good for the heart, and also a small amount of beer.
Still, if you aren’t drinking at all, this isn’t a motive to start drinking. There are other ways to protect your heart, healthier ways, such as regular physical activity and a low-fat diet. Furthermore, if you are planning to become pregnant or you are already pregnant and you used to drink regularly or once in a while, you have to stop drinking. This can be very harmful to both you and your baby. Having a medical condition or being under some sort of treatment that involves drugs also means that you must stop drinking.
Keep in mind that although you can drink occasionally, and it may be good for your heart; you need to be moderate. If you start drinking too much, instead of protecting your heart, you can get serious problems, such as heart failure, stroke, high blood pressure, and also other medical conditions, like liver cirrhosis , because basically, heavy drinking attacks almost every internal organ. So although it is alright to drink a glass of wine or a bottle of beer from time to time, make sure you keep it within limits.
