Manitoba: Alcohol Abuse and Treatment for Teens
Manitoba is one of only three of the provinces and territories in Canada that allows Canadian youth to drink at age eighteen rather than age nineteen. Even with this difference in drinking age, Manitoba does not see a significantly higher rate of teen drinking than other parts of Canada. Like the rest of Canada, approximately three-quarters of teenagers aged fifteen and older use alcohol, and approximately fifty percent of those that admit to using alcohol admit to binge drinking on at least one occasion. These numbers are fairly normal for all areas of Canada; however, and do not set Manitoba apart from the other provinces and territories.
How an individual will react to alcohol is not guaranteed. Many teenagers believe that they will be able to out-think the effects of alcohol once they begin to feel them. However, when a teen begins to drink heavily, he or she will begin to feel the effects of alcohol abuse. This may include a feeling of dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, loss of motor coordination, and loss of inhibition. If the teenager continues to drink after experiencing these symptoms, he or she will then begin to experience the symptoms of alcohol poisoning. After detoxification, an individual can expect to go through a series of different types of rehabilitation and therapy at an alcohol addiction center. What the center offers varies from center to center and region to region, but often, the center will offer coping techniques for addicts, and also different types of counseling for people who participate in alcohol abuse. They will help the individual carve out a life for him or herself that does not involve using drugs or alcohol, and instead allows the minor to live a healthy and productive life.
