Frequently Asked Questions
Yes to both, though the risks depend significantly on how often someone uses, when they started, and the potency of the products. Regular cannabis use can lead to cannabis use disorder, where the person is unable to stop despite negative consequences. The mental health risks are particularly significant: a 2024 CAMH study found that teenagers who use cannabis are at 11 times higher risk of developing a psychotic disorder than those who don't. Cannabis that was available decades ago contained around 1% THC. Today’s products average around 20%, making historical comparisons unreliable. Legal does not mean risk-free.
Yes, and it's more significant than many people expect. Regular heavy cannabis use causes the brain to adapt to the presence of THC, and stopping triggers a withdrawal syndrome that includes irritability, anxiety, disrupted sleep, low mood, loss of appetite, and sweating. Symptoms typically peak around day 2 to 3 and resolve within one to two weeks for most people, though sleep disruption can persist longer in heavy users. Cannabis withdrawal isn't medically dangerous the way alcohol withdrawal is, but it is uncomfortable enough to drive many people back to use, which is why it’s worth understanding and planning for.
The main evidence-based treatments are cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and motivational enhancement therapy, both of which have strong research backing for reducing cannabis use and improving daily functioning. Unlike alcohol or opioid use disorder, there are currently no approved medications specific to cannabis use disorder in Canada, which means the quality of the counselling and the therapeutic relationship are the primary clinical tools. Treatment is available through family doctors, provincial addiction services, and private counselling, often at no direct cost.
