Methadone Detox And Treatment In Alberta

There are numerous methadone clinics throughout the province of Alberta, which provide the drug to assist people with opiate addictions. What many addicts face while on methadone is the uphill battle to get off of the drug safely and check into a drug and alcohol treatment center. The province of Alberta has a standard opioid dependency program that provides methadone and suboxone for patients on an out-patient basis. These types of treatments are not designed to be a final solution and last forever. They were initially designed to help an addict hooked on opiates to get off of the illicit drug, handle the withdrawal symptoms, and wean off of the methadone in order to enter drug rehabilitation and become drug-free. The major problem that many addicts have faced is the physical dependency that methadone creates like any other opiate or opioid. This dependency is what causes the dosages to increase and in turn, makes it that more difficult to stop taking the drug as the withdrawal symptoms can potentially be life-threatening.

Alberta is now facing a major Fentanyl problem throughout the province, with this particular drug being the cause of close to 50 overdoses within the first two months of 2015. Many people will argue that increasing the number of doctors who are able to prescribe methadone will help curb the problem, while others will argue that naloxone is a viable solution in preventing opioid addiction. Whatever the argument may be; an addict should set the goal to become completely drug-free, and this will, of course, leads them to a methadone detox and treatment program. A methadone detox program is a detox center that can specifically help a methadone user withdrawal off of methadone safely. This is typically done through the use of other medications to curb withdrawal symptoms while tapering down the dosage of methadone. This process can take some time, typically from a couple of weeks to over a month, depending on the person’s ability to handle the withdrawals.

Treatment for methadone will involve a great deal of work to help the person recover physically as the body has been through the meat grinder being on the drug and coming off of the drug. Effective treatment for methadone use will also ensure the person's prior addictions are handled to prevent the individual from going back to using their previous drug of choice. This may involve different forms of therapy, counseling, and different treatment methods to accomplish this. Within the province of Alberta, there are many different drug treatment programs that are able to help individuals who have gotten off of methadone. These programs are available as residential services, and outpatient services, with many residential programs being offered as long-term and short-term programs. Methadone detox and treatment are extremely important in order for an addict to become completely drug-free; using methadone is not a long term fix Definition of the word fix for drug addiction, and it can cause many different health problems down the line. The most viable option is seeking out methadone detox and treatment.
