It’s pretty safe to say that nearly all of the drugs that make their way into Canada is through New Brunswick, so it should not surprise anyone that this province has a much higher rate of drug addicts than many of the other provinces

The problem with drug addictions is that it has a devastating effect on the entire province. The more untreated drug addictions there are in a province, the higher the crime rate and unemployment rate. When a person is hooked on drugs they are seldom able to hold a steady job. The lack of funds means that they turn to petty crime. As drug abuse escalates so does the number of violent crimes that the police deal with.

One of the best ways to keep the fallout from drug abuse as minimal as possible is to make sure that the addicts have access to drug treatment. While residential and outpatient treatment programs help, one of the most important aspects in helping make sure that the addicts stay in recovery is Narcotics Anonymous.

Information on Drug Rehab

One of the good things about living in New Brunswick is that there are plenty of Narcotics Anonymous meetings for drug addicts to attend. The province has six different cities that have very active NA meetings. The more often an addict is able to get to a meeting, the more likely they are going to successfully overcome their addiction forever.

Narcotics Anonymous is closely modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous. The works on a twelve-step plan. In order for the program to work the members need to admit that they are addicted to drugs and that they are unable to control the addiction. The program treats all drug addictions as a mental illness. The idea is that if the program can treat the addict’s mental illness, they will also be able to eliminate the reason for them to turn to drugs in the future.

One of the things that Narcotics Anonymous relies on heavily is spirituality. Nearly every phase of the Narcotics Anonymous program turns to God for assistance. For some drug addicts, this is very important, a critical part of the recovery process. Other people find the degree of religion unsettling

The other thing that Narcotics Anonymous borrows from Alcoholics Anonymous is the use of sponsors. Many of the people who are involved in in the NA program list the sponsor as the most critical part of their recovery program. The sponsor is someone that the addict can call whenever they are tempted to turn to drugs.

Narcotics Anonymous is not one hundred percent successful. Not every drug addict who attends the meetings is going to permanently stay away from drugs. While the program would like to claim that they have a one hundred percent success rate, it simply is not realistic. What the program points out is that if just one person is able to overcome their addiction, the program has been successful. The program also points out that the only way the program is going to work is if they are serious about overcoming their addiction.

Ask a Professional

  • What are NA Meetings?

Narcotics Anonymous is an adaptation of Alcoholics Anonymous and uses the 12-step program adapted from AA. The steps are designed to help a person admit they are powerless over their addiction. In addition, it helps them move past their guilt and shame by admitting their faults and making amends with the individuals around them.

  • How do NA Meetings help people quit using drugs?

Individuals work the 12-steps and receive support and encouragement from fellow members and their individual sponsors. In addition, they begin to move past the guilt and shame and begin to make amends.

  • Do NA Meetings work to treat addiction and cravings?

Yes, NA Meetings can help fight cravings and treat addiction. The 12-step meetings owe much of their success to sponsorship. Suppose an individual has the urge to use drugs, they can call their sponsor. Talking it out with a supportive individual helps remove the power from the cravings.
